EMS for the New Zealand Pork Industry

Environmental Management System for New Zealand Pork Producers

This section should be completed by a producer who would like to establish an Environmental Management System (EMS) on their farm. This EMS has been designed so that all the activities that impact on the environment is managed effectively; moving the farm towards being ‘sustainable'.

It is a living document in that it requires the producer to identify areas that need improvement and to act on these over a set time period. Once these activities are operating at an acceptable standard, the producer then needs to reassess the other farm activities in order to decide on the next area to be improved.

This document could also be checked and countersigned by an officer from the relevant council. This would then give both the council and the producer a common understanding of what is happening. This document could also be used a foundation of understanding between the producer and a neighbour.

This sign off from another party is a vital step as it then gives the document added credibility and has the ability to greatly enhance the level of communication and trust between all stakeholders (esp. producers, councils, and immediate neighbours). It may also be used by the council as the sole condition for a resource consent application - this may require negotiation.
